Downfall of the Qing Dynasty
Pu Yi, the last emperor of China
- By the mid-19th century, things were going downhill for the Qing dynasty. Multiple events such as the First and Second Opium Wars and rebellions such as the Taiping Rebellion and the Boxer Rebellion that left China crippled.
- In 1912, the Chinese dynastic cycle came to an end.
- The last emperor of China, Henry Puyi, fell out of power and only ruled his own forbidden city
- Puyi led an eventful life and died in 1967.
Beginning of Nationalism
Sun Yat-Sen, leader of Nationalists
- The first leader to arise from the nationalists was a man named Sun Yat-Sen.
- He started a group called the "Revive China Society" and predicted that the Qing dynasty would come to an end and he was correct.
- Yat-Sen founded the Nationalist group that focused on a Republic/Democratic society.
- He started the idea that China needed to have a transitional period before beginning a full democracy.
- The Nationalists were the largest rebel group following the fall of the Qing
